Seaside has been inhabited by humans since the early Paleolithic period and it is thought that the first written reference to Seaside was in an ad from 1849 for a landing spot for sea shells on Point Reyes National Seashore. In 1865, Captain John Meehan of HMS " Sandwich " landed at Point Reyes with his scientific crew to collect data about marine life. The name Mariners Point came from this landing. The town started as a small fishing village on the edge of Sausalito and grew rapidly during World War II when local companies developed munitions production plants adjacent to shoreline beaches along San Francisco Bay. By 1945, Seaside had reached its peak population with more than 10,000 people. However, due to high demand for military housing during and after World War II and subsequent economic decline, Seaside's population began to shrink until it reached its current size of 9,912 in 2000. Today's economy relies heavily on tourism which accounts for nearly half of Seaside's total revenue and employs over 50% of its workforce (2009). One of the most popular tourist attractions in Seaside is Mills Beach where visitors can enjoy swimming, sunbathing, windsurfing and fishing among other activities; however some residents feel that tourism has taken away much-needed community services such as libraries and health clinics which have struggled to keep up with demand. Despite these criticisms – which are typically leveled against newer tourist destinations rather than older ones – full-time employment rates have continued to grow steadily throughout recent years making it one of Marin County’s fastest growing municipalities. One possible explanation for this growth may be due to increasingly enlightened city leaders who realize that while towns like Sausalito can continue livinglarge off their natural resources without detracting from quality of life or contributing significantly to local economies – including jobs - cities are becoming increasingly important as transportation hubs and center points for suburban development across North America.
