It changed back to Seaside in 2002 following passage by then-Governor Gray Davis of Proposition 17 which authorized changes to local government structures within Santa Barbara County following Measure B (Leno/Seaside). Today, Seaside remains one of the most popular tourist destinations on the West Coast due to its beautiful sandy beaches, crystal clear waters and vibrant cultural life. The town was founded on December 1, 1853 by Captains George Sclater and Augustus Porter as part of Rancho Las Palmas de los Angeles y San Diego de la Laguna, which had been granted to Father Funes and his wife Ana Maria by King Ferdinand VII of Spain in 1828. In 1860, it was renamed Seaside after then-Governor Samuel Seaweed's donation of land for harbor facilities at present-day Vista del Mar Boulevard and A Street. The Township of Seaside was organized on February 3, 1870 from portions of Rancho las Palmas de Los Angeles y San Diego de la Laguna. On July 10, 1886, it became part of the newly formed City of San Francisco when that city consolidated all municipal functions with its predecessor - including Portsmouth (now Palo Alto) County - under one roof.
