In 1887, two men by the name of John Fenton and Samuel Morse conceived the idea of a telescope that could be used to view objects in space. After years of experimentation, they finally produced their first telescope in 1892. It was called the “Fenton Telescope” and it was built on Seal Beach Boulevard in Seal Beach, California. The Fenton Telescope successfully observed stars and planets for the first time. The success of this telescope led to other telescopes being built throughout the country and even into space. In 1922, Edwin Hubble created one of the first ever photosynthesis diagrams with his Fenton Telescope. They moved to Long Beach Island where Washington began working on a wharf next to Longbeach Harbor which would later become Seal Beach (then known as Point Conception) .
