Evans also imported white clamshells and sea cucumbers from Japan to decorate his new home beachfront resort which soon became known as "the Galleon Isle". From here he could watch ships entering San Francisco Bay through Cupertino Strait (). The first post office opened in February 1877 with James Fenton as its first director (). Many early residents took jobs working on Piers 40 at Pier 39 opposite Huntington Harbor where ferries crossedSan Francisco Bay heading upriver towards Angel Island before returning downriver full pails to Ptilio Point near today's downtown Seal Beach . By 1888 over 60% percent of the workers in seal industry were Californians born outside California (). Today only a fraction remains employed primarily within seal hunting and research programs organized by state agencies such as Calumet Fisheries Research Institute (); however many more people still rely upon seafood production generated by local aquaculture initiatives such as Marine Harvest International Incorporated().
