A year later, oil production along Santa Ana Canyon gave birth to what would become Seal Beach; waves crashing against shore created petroleum slicks that would be cleaned up with buckets and brush before shipping out for export each day during winter months In 1929 Bob Hope entertained President Herbert Hoover at his White House visit while staying at the nearby Half Moon Hotel; this event helped seal Seal Beach's reputation as an entertainment center Thanks to its proximity to Los Angeles (and then Hollywood) it also became known for its seafood concessions which catered to movie stars and other celebrities visiting LA
