Seal Beach is a town located on the Pacific Ocean in Alameda County, California. As of the 2010 census, its population was 24,597. Seal Beach is anchored by two large freeways and a major international airport. The city owes its start to the construction of a military airfield in 1922. The area now known as Seal Beach was developed as part of the San Francisco Bay Area after World War II. In 1959, when San Francisco annexed neighboringOakland, Seal Beach became part of Oakland through an Act of Congress. However, it retains its unique character as an inland community with a distinctive history and culture that has not been shared by any other Bay Area municipality. The first permanent residents of what is now Seal Beach were Dutch fishermen who sailed from Holland to Mexico in 1642 looking for Spanish treasure seekers who had already discovered California's coastlines. The first official mention of seal hunting in this area can be found in 1787 when Captain James Cook visited Monterey Peninsula and called it "Beach Haven". Cook noted that there were "several hundred seals" hereabouts and captain John Bogue also reported seeing "seals" while exploring northward along the coast during his 1821-22 voyage around Cape Horn. A number of small fishing villages sprang up along the eastern shoreline during early Californian settlement which included Point Reyes Station (now Half Moon Point), Redwood City (now Redwood National Park), Sausalito (now Sausalito Heights), Orcas Island (now Orca Cove), Maverick Harbor, and New Westminster (later West Vancouver). All these settlements were abandoned within a few years due to lack of food supplies, competition from more established communities upstream or because technological advances made sealing less feasible or desirable than formerly. In 1846 Humboldt County was created from portions of Contra Costa County; land adjacent to what is now Seal Beach was included within Humboldt County limits although no actual town existed until 1872 when Rancho Lagunitas was platted at what is now Lagunitas Naval Air Station on North Coast Highway 1 south of present-day Marina del Rey. In 1908 George Wickersham built Wickersham Dam on Mud Creek east side Of Seal Beach – dam still stands today across from modern day Marine Science Center entranceway off North Coast Highway 1 near Oldsmar Marina
