Not much, but we're getting less seagulls." In fact, sea gulls have dwindled so greatly in number that some residents began to refer to the town as "Gone Gull City". The first Naval Air Station (NAS) at Seal Beach opened on October 1st 1942 with three Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bombers. NAS Seal Beach became operational until it was closed on September 30th 1945 due to World War II ending before it could be used. It reopened later as Naval Shipyard No. 2 (NSW2). Today the shipyard manufactures warships including destroyers and frigates for both US Navy and allies around the world; it also builds submarines for Japan and Korea. In 1957 when Mayor Edmond Jarry proposed building a high school near NAS Seal Beach he got opposition because many people thought there would not be enough space for pupils in a small town such as Seal Beach with only about 100 students per grade level at that time. However, thanks to Congressman John F Kennedy's renovation of Community College District #1 (CCD#1), then part of state government under Governor Ronald Reagan, classes were relocated to Sealy Hall on Harbor Drive in 1963 and enrollment grew rapidly due to an increased demand for education within the community after decades of being left out of state government funding streams which had favored coastal communities like Newport News or Norfolk. Although land restrictions still apply today preventing any more than 12 high schools from opening up within seal beach limits without assurances from county staff that they will provide quality education opportunities for all students regardless of socio-economic background or race/ethnicity - seal beach has seen 7 high school closures since 2000!
