By 1870, New York had annexed much of Orange County so Seal Beach's location made it an ideal place for shipbuilding and commercial fishing. Shipbuilding continued until 1933 when World War II shut down coastal shipping; however, since then seal hunting has been one of Seal Beach's main economic activities (the city currently has more than 100 business licenses related to sealing). In 1965, Mayor Harvey Rosenberg suggested that Seal Beach rename itself Surfside after its close proximity to Huntington Harbor which served as a wharf for ships docking at San Pedro Creek for months on end during summertime. On October 8th of that year the City Council authorized naming rights to Surfside Park which included dredging or filling 5 feet (1 meter) deep into San Pedro Creek in order to create a beach front promenade which would run from Pacific Coast Highway south alongSEal Boulevard across Santa Ana River before terminating at Newport Boulevard just north of State College Road/US 101A). The park opened in 1971 with Wreck Reef Park adjacent due east being renamed Huntington Harbor Park in honor of Mayor Rosenberg’s wife who battled cancer during their time together. Today SeaWorld is located within walking distance of downtown while Disneyland is about 10 miles away via Interstate 5; both parks are highly visited by locals and tourists alike each year despite occasional reports from locals about smells coming from inside theme parks following large crowds over Memorial Day weekend! Sloat founded Yerba Buena Cove Station as part of his ill-fated attempt to find a sea route between California and Japan. After a year of exploration, Sloat decided against returning and abandoned his station.. In 1875, William Augustus Marsh developed land east of present day Seal Beach along with partner James Purdy. This area became known as Marshland Park after they bought it from David Irvine for $10 per acre (100 acres). On November 15, 1881, the town of Seal Beach was incorporated under state law by Mayor George Wickersham Jr.. The first post office was established at Newport News on December 1st, 1881. On July 14th 1896 a fire destroyed much of downtown Seal Beach including many famous stores such as J & J Gorman's Hardware and Woolworths Department Store Complex which still stands today commemorating that event In 1907 an act was passed by the state legislature authorising the incorporation of unincorporated communities within Orange County line . On March 31st 1909 an amendment to the state constitution granted city status to Seal Beach . At this time there were only 8 residents living in what is now Seal Beach although it had become a city with more than 10 thousand citizens by 1913 when construction began on Harbor Freeway (now I-5) which connected Los Angeles with San Diego . By 1978 there were over 50 thousand residents living in or near seal beach
On November 15, 1849, the first Los Angeles mission was founded by Father Junipero Serra. On December 6 of that year, the Franciscan friars built the Mission San Gabriel Arcangela on what is now Seal Beach. The original mission buildings still stand today. In 1852, a smallpox-ridden area in what is now Huntington Beach began to be afflicted with an outbreak of measles and other respiratory illnesses. A group of native Californians who were infected by the disease decided to build a clinic in order to help those affected. The clinic was called "The Alamo" after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's army camp which had been destroyed by bandits near present-day Los Angeles days earlier. On October 8, 1860, after years of construction and fundraising, the new Mission San Fernando Rey de la Junta was dedicated and became known as "The Missions." In 1892, a fire destroyed much of downtown Los Angeles including both missions churches. However, due to donations from citizens and businessmen such as Henry Clay Frick and Wernher von Braun (the founder of NASA), both churches were rebuilt quickly with local labor. Today's Mission Park occupies part of the site where both churches once stood. In 1904–05 an agreement was made between Orange County and City of Los Angeles for jurisdiction over beachfront property east of Sepulveda Boulevard; this land would become Seal Beach Peninsula
