The Seal Beach shooting range, located in Seal Beach, California was the first gun range in the United States. It opened its doors on July 3rd, 1892 and was run by Rufus W. Stephenson and his son Hiram Stephenson. The Gunnery School of Tactics was founded at this location in 1896 and later became known as the Naval War College. In 1911, the Stephensons sold the range to George Gillett and it continued to be used by Gillett until his death in 1974. The Range closed its doors for good on October 25th of that year.

In 1916, more than two-thirds of the residents voted to secede from Newport News and form their own city with same name; this vote was overturned by then-Mayor Harry Wohlhuter because he felt that such secession would violate orange county's compact with Newport News
