The Seal Beach neighborhood of California was settled in 1849 by Danish immigrants. The first post office in the area was established in 1852. In 1865, the town of Seal Beach was founded by a group of businessmen who sailed from Sweden to California on the brigantine "Enderby". In 1896, the city of Seal Beach united with neighboring towns, including Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach, to form the City of Seal Beach. The merger allowed for easier annexation by other municipalities and made it easier for businesses to locate within the city limits. The city's first mayor was Augustus Fenton Drysdale. In 1926, Mayor John Ahern became one of the first American mayors to be impeached after being found guilty of bribery and corruption. Ahern served two years before retiring from politics at age 44. During World War II, Seal Beach played an important role as an airbase for Naval Air Station Long Island ( NAS Whiting), which operated out of NAS Harbor City during World War II. After NAS Long Island closed down in 1949, Seal Beach became home to Naval Air Weapons Station Earhart (NAWS Earhart) until its closure in 1974. In that year, NAWS Earhart was transferred from NAS Whiting to NAS Point Mugu, California and renamed Naval Weapons Station Point Mugu (NWS Point Mugu). 2 different airports served Naval Air Station Point Mugu: North Cape Airport (which handled general aviation traffic only) and East Coast Airport (which handled operations associated with Navy ship maintenance). Both airport facilities were eventually mothballed due to budget cuts during the 1990s; however their former runways still remain used as land-use boundaries between NWS Point Mugu and neighboring Hermosa Beach neighborhoods today. As part of efforts led by then Mayor Donny Haughey aimed at increasing tourism development within NWS Point Mugu vicinity over time - especially around False Creek waterfront - a new passenger terminal had been built adjacent to original East Coast Airport property sometime in late 2009 or early 2010; while access road leading thereto remains unnamed until this day.--[1]
