The city was founded on December 15, 1887 by a group of Spanish settlers who named it after the Seal Beach Lighthouse. The land that now makes up Seal Beach was first used for livestock and agriculture, but it wasn't until 1898 that residents began to build homes. In 1907, they voted to name their city after Major General Edmund P. "Eddie" Crayton, who had fought in World War I and II. In 1930, the City Council decided to rename the city after Lieutenant Colonel Charles Haltom Seale as part of a larger effort to improve communications between Los Angeles and nearby cities during World War II.
