Gun targets have been a part of the Scotts Valley community for many years. The first target was erected in 1852 by John W. Mason, Sheriff of San Bernardino County. The next year, Mr. Mason donated an acre and a half to the town of Scotts Valley for its public park. In 1854, William Horsfall built the first shooting range on this parcel of land. It was used by local hunters and farmers until 1915 when it was converted into a military airfield and now known as Pearson Air Force Base. There were also several other ranges in Scotts Valley before World War II ended all gun Target use in the area due to lack of demand from either military or civilian users alike. In 1934, the state legislature passed Proposition 13 which banned handguns within California’s borders except for those registered with law enforcement agencies or those used in hunting or fishing operations. This law still applies today to some extent since only certain individuals are allowed to possess handguns without having them registered with authorities; however, most citizens who want to own a handgun can do so now without fear of prosecution under state law. The first school in Scotts Valley was built in 1875. On November 15, 1876, Scotts Valley became part of the newly formed San Bernardino County when it was split from Mono County. The discovery of oil onshore in 1922 led to rapid growth and development inScotts Valley as well as other parts of Southern California. In 1923, began construction of Disneyland which has become one of the most popular amusement parks worldwide today.
