The first store open in Scotts Valley was A & J Grocery Co., which operated from 1886 to 1902 on Main Street near where Interstate 5 crosses over the river into Sacramento County; later operations were housed at 209 E State St., which served as a movie theater until 1976 before going out of business also. The First Methodist Episcopal Church built on Alameda Street east of Main Street served as both a church and school until 1951; then all services were held at Fine Arts Center across Union Boulevard from today's Barnes & Noble bookstore chain until that building's demolition in 2009 made way for redevelopment including housing developments (the last two blocks are currently occupied by VistaLink Wireless), offices/embedded businesses (including ABC Radio)and more recently an arena used for concerts featuring such acts as Metallica and Slayer during their tours since 2013-14 while stores have reopened inside those buildings although some alterations have taken place including extensive reworking of storefronts' facades with new window systems designed to promote ventilation rather than light reflection typical among retail development outside major concert venues these days due to increased demand from nearby residential developments which often feature large windows throughout most or all face areas iwitnessed during many recent tour stops adjacent thereto

In 1910, he founded what would become one of California's first successful banks-The James Prescott Scotts Guaranty Corporation-and later became a major landowner in the area. By 1928, Scott had donated over two million acres (8 km2) in what would become Scotts Valley to establish a national forest preserve that today has a population of more than 200,000 people living within its boundaries.
