In the early 1800s, Scotts Valley was a thriving agricultural community located in southern California. The area now known as Scotts Valley was first settled by the Ohlone Native Americans in the late 18th century. The town was founded on the east bank of the Sacramento River and grew rapidly due to its fertile soil and easy access to water resources. By 1850, Scotts Valley had over 1,000 residents and boasted a variety of businesses including a flour mill, tannery, carriage works, bakery and grocery stores. A local paper described Scott’s Valley as “the most flourishing place on earth” due to its rich Farming history and many fine residences built during this time period. On July 25th, 1859, five citizens of Scotts Valley were killed when their wagon train was ambushed by Indians near present-day Signal Hill. The incident is considered one of the deadliest massacres in California history. A few months later, on October 2nd, 1859, another wagon train consisting of twentyfive people was also attacked by Indians at Sutter's Grove southeast of present-day Alpine. Seven people died and thirteen were wounded in this attack which is still considered one of the worst atrocities committed against Native Americans in California. In 1860 tensions between settlers and Native Americans boiled over after an altercation at Sutter's Grove which led to heated demonstrations across the county boundary. After several abortive attempts at peaceful resolution through negotiations failed, Governor Edmund Gillem issued a proclamation calling for martial law throughout California in response to these incidents. This measure effectively ended any form of public protest against white supremacy in rural America during this era.
