The name "Scotts Valley" comes from John Henny's Ranch which lay east of present day Scotts Valley on what are now Umpqua Road and State Route 101 between 1849-1852 during Joseph Scodelario's survey for US 101 across Southern Californias claimed land grant system prior to Mexican American War *. In 1848–9 Wm Richardson surveyed Half Moon Lake then called Spring Creek near modern day Scotts Valley according to Willamette Land Grant Map*. This location would eventually become part of San Francisco.* Although no evidence exists that any permanent residents or pioneers lived within today's boundaries at this time*, early records do suggest that people were drawn to or frequented nearby Half Moon Lake where Indians fished**.* Many prospectors who traveled through these areas stopping intermittently at various locations throughout Northern California including Placer County before finally reaching Mission Bay* continued their journey upriver pastpresent day Orinda* into Sacramento County arriving there about September 10th 1850*. Lieutenant James Fenton charted this route creating a general plan for travel through Northern California dated November 30th 1850 while travelling from Monterey Junction* To Sutterville*/ Gold Rushtown*/ Sacramento*/ Benicia*/ Napa*/ Yoloheka*/ Ukiah */ Arewelde */ Fremont */ Crescent City/* Santa Clara/* Benicia/ Placerville/* Potosi/ Moraga/ Lancaster */ Eureka

Over time various businesses have been established here such as banks and grocery stores; however, it has also become home to several music festivals including the Monterey Pop Festival and International Folk Music Festival. Today Kirkland Community College is located within walking distance of most residents making it an ideal place for education purposes as well as starting your own business or family tradition!
