On July 16, 1825, after winning an air battle over Stockton Bay against Mexican forces commanded by Joaquín Herrera y Costilla, Commodore John Dutton ordered Father Altieri to open up direct trade with Sacramento through this new route In 1848–49 gold seekers discoveredgold near present-day Hercules and began exploring for other mines in what became known as Gold Country. By 1850 most of eastern Contra Costa County had been explored and placer mining had ceased; only Alameda County remained largely untouched until prospectors found oil shale there in 1901. When railroads arrived in California during the late 1860s they introduced heavy industry such as sawmills and foundries into hitherto agricultural areas including parts of East Contra Costa County where agriculture still constituted a major source of income

On February 1, 1861, Saratoga became part of Napa County when that county was created from parts of San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. The first post office at Saratoga was established on July 10, 1851; it changed its name to Mariposa on November 17, 1852. On JULY 3rd 1860 JOHN P A LLIOTT USED HIS SALE POWER TO CONFIRM THAT SARATOGA WILL BE A COUNTY AND NOT A TOWN! so we must have had a FIRST STORE back then!!!

In 1872, Saratoga was incorporated as a city with a population of 25,000. The city's first mayor was George W. Smith.
