Saratoga, California is a small town located in Northern California. It has been inhabited by the Ohlone people for over 10,000 years. The first Europeans to visit Saratoga were Dutch traders in 1624. They named the area New Netherland because of the new land they discovered there. In 1848, the United States acquired Oregon and California from Mexico during the Mexican-American War. On January 24, 1850, Congress passed an act creating a new state out of parts of California and Oregon. This was known as State of California. The name Saratoga was chosen to honor General John Burgoyne's victory at Saratoga Creek on October 17, 1847. The first white settlers arrived in what is now Saratoga County in 1851. They were attracted to the view from high up on Mount Hamilton overlooking all of northwestern CA and into Nevada and western Oregon (then part of Mexico). There were several attempts to plant crops on this virgin land but it was too cold for anything other than grasslands or woods. A couple hundred men built log cabins here around 1861 when gold started being found near Sutterville in nearby Sacramento County On July 14th 1863 Union troops under General Don Carlos Manuel Lopez came upriver from Sacramento County towards Gold Rushtown (now Ukiah) after encountering Confederate forces defending that locality downstream from where they had just pushed through Sutterville Bridge across Clear Creek: When they reached Gold Rushtown they found no gold but did find many supplies including food and clothing to helpsupply their troops while away at war; some 20 miles upstream lay Yuba City which had also become an important supply depot run by citizens of Rocklin prior to that point
