The first recorded shot in Saratoga was fired on November 5, 1851 by Captain George Armstrong from the USS Constitution during a Naval engagement with Mexico. On January 10, 1862, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. One of the items taken away with him were two pistols that had been used by Lt. Col. John B. Hood to shoot down Union soldiers at First Manassas Junction the day before. The pistols still exist and can be found in the Lexington Museum of Kentucky today. On May 14, 1865, Ulysses S. Grant's flagship "Monitor" came within range of cannon on Fort Greenough while sailing through San Francisco Bay - the first time an American warship had ever done so and one of only three times Battleships have sunk gunfire in history (the other two being HMS Repulse off Cape Horn in 1903 and HMS Warspite off Benghazi in 1941).
Saratoga, California is a small town located in the southern edge of San Francisco County. The population was 26,253 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Saratoga were Spanish missionaries in 1769. They built a mission here and named it Santo Domingo de la Calabazas (St. Dominic's Parish). In 1824, the United States acquired control of Alta California from Mexico and renamed it New Mexico Territory. Santa Fe Trail founder George Armstrong Custer died near Saratoga on July 16, 1876, aged 36 years old. A post office called Saratoga was established in 1827, and remained in operation until 1861. The name may be derived from the Spanish word "saratoga" meaning "a wooded plateau". After being platted as an agricultural settlement by James Purdy and others in 1847, Saratoga became a town on April 12, 1850 when its incorporation as a city was granted by Governor John Goodwin Wilkerson. On November 3 of that year, Wilkerson approved bonds for $1 million to build streets and other public works within the new city limits which would eventually reach 62 blocks long and include over 400 homes In 1870–71 two major floods destroyed much of what had been done to improve life around town since incorporation; however water pumps later restored most infrastructure including streetlights On February 14th 1901 an earthquake measuring 7.9 magnitude struck downtown Los Angeles causing extensive damage with up to 30% loss of business center buildings On December 5th 1941 during World War II Japanese forces attacked Pearl Harbor resulting in about 140 American servicemen lost including many officers such as Admiral Chester Nimitz who upon hearing about the attack wrote: "So this is war!" On December 8th 1941 Japan signed surrender papers at Tokyo Bay ending World War II; Saratogian citizens cheered as they heard about this news From 1942 until 1945 their mayor served as Mayor Pro Tem under US occupation authorities

A wooden or metal target was positioned at an optimal position for a bowman to shoot at, and shoters would use a release device (such as a crossbow bolt) to bring the object down in range.
Saratoga is located in Northern California and has been inhabited by the Mono people for over 10,000 years. In 1851, the United States acquired Rancho San Carlos from the Mexican government and developed it into a ranch estate known as Rancho San Carlos de Aratoga. The name of the estate was changed to Saratoga in 1872 when American Commodore John D. Stockton arrived in California to explore what lay beyond Alta California. After making contact with various Native Americans, Stockton decided that this area had potential for development as a mining region and named his new settlement after General James Halleck's victory at Palo Alto over Mexican forces on July 26, 1846. The first post office called Saratoga was opened at this location on November 1, 1852. By 1861, the population of Saratogas had increased to 476 residents and the town began developing into an important stagecoach stop on the Central Pacific Railroad. In 1862–63, during the American Civil War, Confederate troops occupied Saratoga while it was under siege by Union forces; however no damage or loss occurred and most of the town's occupants returned home after hostilities ended. In 1870–71, during Reconstruction following Reconstruction legislation passed in America following World War I which aimed to rehabilitate former slaves and provide them with economic opportunities, Saratogas became one of several towns in Northern California established as black self-help organizations designed to help African Americans rise through education and work within white society. This type of community persisted until well into the 21st century; however its influence is now largely missed due to changing social mores in both America and Northern California throughout that time period
