Santee, California is a small city in the northern part of San Diego County, California. The population was 9,872 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern side of San Diego Bay and is bordered by Rancho Peñate to the north and east, Santee Canyon to the south, and Mission Valley to the west. The first Europeans to visit what is now Santee were Spanish priests in 1769 looking for a place between La Jolla and San Diego. They named it "San Miguel de Allende" after one of their number who had been there before them. The mission was founded in 1776 by Father Junípero Serra as an all-male rancho with land grant from Mexico City. Father José Acevedo built a mission here in 1821 which became known as Mission Santa Fé y Concepción (Mission Santa Fe and Conception). After Mexican independence in 1821, American settlers arrived and began building homes around missions such as Mission Santa Fé y Concepción; this led to renameing both missions to Santee on December 7, 1850 when US President James Kossuth signed legislation changing US post office addresses from "Pueblo de las Californias" (Township of San Marcos) to "San Dieguito". On January 1, 1850, waves of immigrants flowing into California via the Oregon Trail arrived at Mission Harbinger just inside present-day Santee limits on November 29th - making it one of only two places along that route where new arrivals stopped en masse outside modern day Santee landmarks like Hearst Castle or Interstate 5's interchange with I-5 just south of town center today. At its peak during early 1851 - coinciding with gold discoveries near Point Loma - over 2 million people passed through Harbinger throughout late December alone! A few weeks later on January 8th following General Antonio Lopez's victory at Coronado Bridge over Ramona River – opening up much needed farmland surrounding Los Angeles – military officers and Mexicans under Lt Col Manuel Nieto next set about expanding Alta Californiana across what are now our southeastern corner & northeastern edge suburbs including central & southern portions today’s Santana Hills including parts/complete neighborhoods east side/northwest side & even some streets within street grid downtown now residential areas also annexed well into City Limits being less than ½ mile wide by late 1860s

Today, there are few visible industries other than agriculture as well as some light manufacturing which makes up a tiny percent of the local GDP. Santee has significant historical significance for its role within California’s early central valley community and for its connection to San Francisco Vasquez de Balboa (1785-1846) who explored and charted much of what is now central California during his travels through that area while serving as an aide to Governor José Joaquín Murillo y Soto between 1828-29 and 1830-31.

It is located on the eastern coast of San Francisco Bay and forms part of the East Bay Regional District. Santee was established in 1852 as an adobe resort town on Presidio Heights above Sausalito. In 1872, it became part of the new City of Berkeley. The first post office in Santee was opened in December 1852 by Wm. Haddon and Brothers; the name came from "San-TEE-a". A schoolhouse also served as a post office until 1875. In 1870, John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort on an island in Sausalito Harbor and named it after himself; this fort helped protect San Francisco from attack during its early years as a settlement. In 1875, incorporation of Santee occurred when many residents petitioned for incorporation because they were tired of living near Berkeley without municipal services; this allowed them to avoid paying taxes on their properties within city limits. By 1860, there were only about fifty people living in Santee; by 1870, however, Santee had grown to over one thousand residents due to waves of immigrants arriving during the late 1800s: Germans (1810–30), Irish (1830–50), Italians (1850–70), Chinese (1870–1900), Japanese (1912–21), and Russians (1917). During World War II, Santee was hit hard by bombing raids from Japan that destroyed most of its homes and businesses; however, most residents were able to rebuild quickly with support from local institutions such as the Red Cross and military personnel stationed here during World War II. In 1951 Mayor Arthur Golden voted against annexing Livermore into Berkeley so that it would be within city boundaries but this decision caused public outcry which led him to reverse his vote two months later under pressure from various organizations including the League for American Progress which had become concerned about Livermore's potential impact onBerkeley's economy if annexed into Berkeley proper. Aftermath included demonstrations outside Golden's home throughout 1951 while he made his case before a city council committee chaired by Mayor George Ryan who ultimately ruled against annexation because Livermore would have been too close to downtown Berkeley without any available land for growth or development although Livermore did gain some access to property along Interstate 80 east of town prior to its purchase by Oakland University in 1987 subsequently creating what is now suburbanOakland across I-80 behalfofSantEE authorities who maintain strict control overLivermore affairs despite increasing housing demand since its annexation).
