Santee, California is a small town in California's Central Valley. It is located about an hour northwest of Fresno and two hours northeast of Sacramento. The population was 3,711 at the 2000 census. The Santee Valley was first populated by Native Americans in the 17th century. A mission founded there in 1821 served the Franciscans until its closure in 1846. In 1851, Rancho San Joaquin de la Vega was acquired from José Armijo and it became part of the US government domain as part of Rancho Mexican Land Act of 1862. In 1904, Santee grew to become a city with a population of 10,000 due to its location on water resources that drew farmers and ranchers to the valley for irrigation purposes (the Los Angeles Aqueduct crossed over into Santee Township). The first post office opened in 1908. By 1913, Santee had grown to have a total population of 25,000 residents. During World War II, Santee played an important role as an Army Air Forces airfield serving as both bomber and fighter base during the war's early days (1939-1945). The area also saw heavy combat during World War II when Japanese forces occupied Southern California during hostilities that lasted from 1942- 1945 inclusive. More than 80% of all aircraft destroyed or damaged at these bases were American made; this included more than 60% by Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bombers operated from nearby Sylmar Municipal Airport which was also used by Marine planes ferrying troops ashore for amphibious landings on Leyte Island during 1944- 1945 operations code named Operation Coronet . In 1968, significant progress was made towards connecting what are now downtown Santee with Interstate 5 which ran through town east-west but then turned northward near Chico before joining I-5 just south of where it intersects present day Route 66 eastbound lanes just past Main Street) following plans laid out by Mayor Don Armstrong who desired improved transportation access for his citizens within minutes' distance not onlyof Downtown but also other key choke points such as Needles/Agoura Hills/Redondo Beach

After years of back and forth negotiations between the companies and local officials, prospectors discovered gold near Santee in 1874 and began to arrive in droves; prices for gold started high enough that modest farmers could afford to sell grain instead of selling potatoes or other vegetables direct to market On January 1st 1886 San Francisco Bay Bridge connected San Francisco with Marin County through Enterprise Roadsteading what would become known as "The Golden Gate" On November 15th 1888 a group led by Hyrum Sprague decided to burglarize a warehouse belonging to J F Murphy & Sons on Telegraph Hill; they succeeded Codman Sayre who had been guarding the property since mid-September 1888 after learning about their intentions Sprague and his two companions sought revenge upon Murphy’s family for several months leading up to their attack which took place during Christmas week 1888 at around 2:00 am while everyone else was asleep inside;sprague killed five members including his father before being captured by police less than three hours later While incarcerated he dictated into a stenographer's transcription machine many infamous quotes such as "I have but one request--that you will let me die" State Senator John Prentice declared on December 16th 1888 that Sprague had acted alone without any accomplices resulting in his acquittal However some conspiracy theorists believe that Sprague may have been aided/abetted by others involved with The Octopus Group(see footnote below) yet still ultimatey convicted sprague died sentencely from natural causes less than six months after his release from prison..
