On October 15th 1860 a group of men including James Fenton set out from Black Diamond Ranch on present day Highway 395 for an unknown destination but soon realized they were not following goldfields Directions but rather intended to cross overland into San Bernardino County via Needles Creek which crossed at Death Valley National Park east of town limits today's Needles Road bridge across Owens River around milepost 12 miles south of where it forks today's Interstate 5 exit 194 (Rancho Arroyo Seco Rd). By November 8th 1860 about 25 men had reached Needles Creek having journeyed more than 375 miles nonstop over difficult terrain with no water or food supplies - their only support had been horses and pack mules carrying goods necessary for prospecting not sustenance! No one knows exactly where they went next but within weeks all contact between these early claimants and those still searching for them has ended... Today most people believe they either returned home or followed a route that lead them northward along I-5 until they reached Lake Arrowhead before turning northeast backtracking towards Needles Creek Bridge circa milepost 10 today's Death Valley Blvd., intersecting with US Hwy 64(I-5) just past present day Antelope Springs Reservoir then continuing northeast on I-5 past Durango before terminating at Big Piney Gap Conservation Preserve northwest of modern Big Piney Gap along US Hwy 191... Although there are several places credit may be given variously including: Eagle Nest Ranch east of town site on Antelope Springs Rd., Jim Bridgman’s Ranch southeast of town site off Old Stagecoach Rd., Tom Laughlin’s Gulch southwest corner of townsite off Old Stagecoach Rd., John Sutter’s ranch southeast corner Of old stagecoach road & Weller Ravine off Millbrae Dr., numerous other suggestions exist many more likely due simply to lack contemporary documentation corroborating any specific location claims

The town grew rapidly due to its location and natural resources, and by the early 20th century it had reached a population of over 1,000. In 1919 Santee became part of the new City of Oakland, California. The Hoffmans were descendants of Dutch settlers who arrived in Alameda County in 1847. The family started farming around Santee in 1868 and gradually acquired additional land until they had several thousand acres (1 km²). They built a large farmhouse which still stands today and which has been used as a museum since 1985. In 1919 Santee became part of the new City of Oakland, California when it was incorporated as a city with a population of over 2,500 people. The Hoffmans donated their home to Oakland for use as its City Hall. In recent years the house has been used for other purposes including housing for the University at Berkeley's School of Architecture and Planning and for occasional events such as Fourth Of July fireworks displays. Santee is one example of how rapid growth can lead to problems for small towns such as Santee that are unable to keep up with increased demand from residents or businesses. Despite this history, though, much remains unchanged about Santee since its incorporation into Oakland more than eighty years ago: its vibrant community spirit; strong economy; close-knit local relationships; and focus on education and culture both within and outside the town itself
