After federal deregulation of railroads in 1980, Amtrak bought most of Union Pacific Corporation's trackage within Riverside County and started operations at the former Antelope Valley Depot in Santee on May 1, 1984. Santee, California (population: 18,977), located in the Central Valley of California, was founded on July 10, 1852 by Father José de Jesús Montoya and his wife María de la Concepción y Salazar. The town became a part of what is now Fresno County on November 3, 1859. The post office at Santee was established on October 15, 1872. In 1906 the Santee Dam was built to provide water for the city and surrounding communities. The dam also created Lake Oroville which eventually formed part of the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta. In 1957 Santee incorporation as an unincorporated community with its own school board succeeded a petition drive by citizens to become a full-fledged municipality. On February 2, 1960 the first annexation election resulted in the incorporation of Santee as a city with its own government and police department under City Manager Leroy Borenage. The city population reached 27,000 by 1976 when it amalgamated with Visalia and Modesto Counties to form Stanislaus County. Santee's economic history has been largely affected by two large irrigation projects that were carried out within its borders during much of the 20th century: The John Sutter Canal Project (1912-1929) and the Hetch Hetchy Aqueduct Project (1925-1946). Both projects have left their mark on local economy and infrastructure through both positive aspects such as increased agricultural production and negative impacts such as creating large areas of barren land used for housing developments or military purposes over time
Santee, California is a small town in the central region of California, about 60 miles (100 km) northeast of Sacramento. The population was 793 at the 2010 census. It is located within Kern County and it has a land area of only 0.9 square miles (2 km²). The first European to visit Santee was Juan Bautista de Anza on December 8, 1769. He named it San Francisco sent by Mission Santa Clara de Asís. In 1821, Mexican troops burned down part of the mission and destroying all its buildings except for one which still stands today as the Town Hall Building on Main Street.
