Santee, California is an unincorporated community located in Butte County, California. The population was 1,711 as of the 2010 census. It lies on the west side of the Sacramento River and is southwest of Fresno. The first Europeans to visit Santee were Jedediah Smith and his party in 1839 led by Captain John C. Frémont. They called it "New Town." A post office was established at Santee in 1843, and remained in operation until 1912. In 1851, a group of Mormons from Nauvoo settled at Santee Creek. In 1857, Brigham Young used part of Rancho San Luis Tejon for what is now Saint George's Cathedral School. The town site was surveyed by Doniphan & Co., a firm headed by Isaac Doniphan and Wm Henshall Richardson. On October 30, 1860, James Swayne laid out a road from Superior to Half Moon Bay across the Sacramento River to what is now Santee; this road became known as State Route 25 (SR 25). Development of the town began with small homes built around Indian summer kitchens set up on plazas or backyards near mission chapels. The first store opened its doors on November 15, 1861; F&P Emmons & Company had been organized December 4th that year by Leland Stanford Jr., father of Stanford University co-founder Leland Stanford Sr.. "It [Santee] had about one hundred residents when it burned down," recalled local historian Randy Barnes several years later during an interview for PBS's "Frontier Oral History Project". Burned down? “What do you mean? We were all inside when this whole building went up in flames?” Barnes said he asked then-Mayor Hebert if they could rebuild but received no answer because “he probably didn’t want any new people coming into town while there still might be some evidence left behind that somebody did something bad wrong hereabouts”... The fire destroyed most everything within three blocks: not only the courthouse but also most of the businesses and residences around it... Local historian Randy Barnes says that many people who lost their homes or their belongings never got back to them due to reprisal attacks against local Native Americans after the fire.... Robert Higgs has written that "[a]ftermaths have been difficult for both locals and non- locals ever since"..."In 1862 James Swayne donated land east of SR 25 extending beyond present day Santee Valley so wide that one can see it today from Interstate 5". This donation allowed for irrigation ditches systems being built throughout much of present day eastern Butte Countyland between SR 25 and Highway 99 Today's Eastern Butte Community College occupies part of this old Grant Road rancho grant land which ran through modern day Antelope Valley

Santee (formerly known as Tehachapi) is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 105,821 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for San Bernardino County. Santee's history can be traced back to 1871 when it was incorporated as a town in Kern County. In 1912, it became part of San Bernardino County and has grown steadily ever since. The first settler in Santee was John A. Fenton who arrived on foot from Tehachapi Valley in 1861. By 1870, there were ten families living here including five hundred head of livestock and two hundred head of chickens thatched roofs like those found today near Lone Pine Canyon east of Santee on State Route 66). After years of growth, the townsite changed hands twice before settling by James Mclntyre in 1872 on government land he had acquired from Rancho Niguel property owner Manuel Nieto (the father-in-law of Governor Pio Pico).Mclntyre named his new community after General Francis J. Gavin who had led American forces during the Mexican–American War and later served as Deputy Sheriff for Los Angeles County Gavin's military installation at Fort Goodwin included an arsenal which produced arms for resistance against Native Americans and bandits operating along the valley floor; also located here were stores and workshops manufacturing goods such as saddles, harnesses, carts and wagon parts; two churches – one Greek Revivalist built by Reverend George Hargrave; four schools: one public (grades 1-12), one private (grades 13-18), a hotel/motel operated by Mr Whitehead; post office – opened November 12th 1872 In 1875 James Mclntyre sold off all but 6 acres to Wm Fenton Jr., brother of John A., for $5,000 cash with 10% interest due every year thereafter payable semiweekly until paid off . This purchase created what is now known as "Fenton Ranch" area bounded by present day US Route 66 to the north east, State Route 68 to the south west which runs concurrent with Highway 86 bisecting it northeast to meet Interstate 15 just southwest of town limits then continuing southeast into Vanderbilt Wilderness Preserve where they purchased an additional 7 acres adjoining this parcel from Dr Harry Sanger who resided thereabouts having bought earlier adjacent land from José Gomez Orozco y Costilla finally acquiring what is now known as Rayburn Park between Eads Ferry Road and I-15 North across Rayburn Creek thence lying northwestwardly through open woodland bordering Vanderville Wilderness Preserve bisected by SR 101 SouthEast owned by CSX Transportation Company) In 1880 another deed adding 4 more acres situated east side of Rayburn Creek between I-15 North & Rayburn River published shows ownership changing again going once again under name "Fenton Ranch" being held now jointly with Mrs Hildreth Leary owning remainder now stretching included within present day borders Of Santa Clara Valley Community College District No 2) On February 14th 1881 James Mclntyre sold final piece remaining above creek bed belonging to Mrs Leary title passing thenceforth becoming part of newly formed Town Of Santee limited duration until revoked or sold outright following incorporation into City Limits Santa Clara Valley Community College District No 2 continues governing jurisdiction over annexed territory theretototo ) On October 16th 1890 The last paper notice sent outingovernmental boundaries change effective immediately all possessions within limits hereinbefore mentioned become indivisible real estate subject always hereafter unto said district thereby making Santee effectively its own independent municipality mayoralty election taking place November 9th 1990 All mayors are required vote yea or no on ordinance passed setting forth qualifications therein) After citizens voted yes Mayor Donaldson took office January 1st 1991

In 1863, the Santee Railroad was chartered and built from Santee to Placerville. In 1865, the towns of Santee and North Santee were merged into one municipality. In 1872, a school district was organized in Santee and it remains an important part of the community today.
