As part of this reformation, Santa Fe decided that they would need more trains than they could affordPreviously they had used steam locomotives on their routes but this changed with the introduction of diesel engines in 1938 when president Franklin D Roosevelt proposed that all American locomotives be converted to diesel operation by 1941 To meet his goal, he ordered manufacturers to produce 40000 diesels over six years starting in 1941 Santa Fe was able to purchase 4008 Class 740DM locomotives from GEICO who manufactured them at their plant in Scranton, Pennsylvania These locomotives were given numbers such as 2127 through 2260 on December 5th 1941 On March 6th 1942 President Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066 which stated that all railroads must convert all Diesel locomotives within seven months or face economic ruin . Santa Fe did not have enough money available even though they had attempted conversion earlier Union Pacific Railroad purchased GEICO's production rights for $358 million dollars This purchase set off a bidding war among various manufacturers who wanted a piece of this market share It took five years before all eligible manufacturer's products arrived at Union Pacific's plant in Chicago In May 1945 UnionPacific received delivery of their first Class 740DM engine number 2284 from GEICO On July 1st 1945 General Electric delivered their last class 740DM engine number 2252 followed by National General Electric on August 11th 1945 Serial Numbers ran like this: 2520-2527 etc

The Santee, California area was first settled in 1852 by brothers Manuel and Lorenzo Reyes. The town of Santee was founded on the Rancho San Antonio east of present-day Santee. In 1858, José Castro founded a Mexican mission near the junction of the Río Islas and Río San Bernardino rivers. In 1861, Don Carlos María de Custodio organized a ranch in what is now Santee to supply his forces during the American Civil War. The town began to grow rapidly after supplies arrived from Mexico and soon had a post office, school, hotel and other buildings. By 1870, Santee had a population of 1,500 people and was an important stop on the Northern Pacific Railroad. The townsite changed hands several times until it was acquired by John Clements Woolley in 1896 for $10,000. Woolley added an airfield to the town and renamed it Fort Worth Army Air Field after General Douglas MacArthur's airbase in Japan at Eagles Nest (now Kirtland AFB). Fort Worth Army Air Field remained an important military facility until its closure in 1957.
