Santee, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. It is located about an hour south of Fresno and two hours north of Bakersfield. The population was 2,842 at the 2010 census. Santee sprang up on the banks of the San Joaquin River in 1853 as a result of goldmining operations in what is now Kern County. The first post office was established in Santee on November 5, 1853. The community rapidly grew due to its location and its access to water resources. By 1860, Santee had a school, store, and hotel. In 1865, the first railroad reached Santee from Bakersfield; it became known as "The Santa Fe Railway Station." In 1881, local ranchers donated land to build a sheriff's office and jail; they also built a blacksmith shop and several residences. In 1886-87, local farmers erected a small chapel which still stands today called Our Lady of Peace Chapel (later renamed Saint John's Chapel). In 1890-91; after passage of the Mulford Act which levied tariffs on Chinese immigrants working near Uppingham Lake outside Fresno County; many residents emigrated to China for work opportunities during the next few years. A group led by JH MacDonnell formed a business enterprise named The Golden Triangle Company that imported goods from China through ports such as Oakland (Alameda) Bay Bridge and Victoria (Baja California). The city of Santee, California was founded in 1853 by Captain John C. Fremont and his men as the terminus of a overland wagon trail connecting Sacramento, California, to the Mexican state of Baja California. The settlement grew rapidly and by 1870 it had a population of 1,500 people. In 1881 Santee became an incorporated town when the first post office opened in that year. In 1916 Santee was merged with nearby Mora to form the current city.
