He named it San Francisco de la Teja after his hometown of San Fernando de Tejeda in Spain. A Rancho San Rafael was granted to José Maria Czapla by Governor Manuel Nieto on September 30, 1826. John Sutter arrived in 1849 and founded the towns of Sonoma and Petaluma near present day Santee. On July 7, 1859, a post office called Santa Rosa began serving residents of Petaluma Township which now includes Santee proper.. In 1872 when Interstate 5 was built throughSonoma County, parts of what are now Santee Township were annexed into new cities includingPetaluma and Guerneville along with unincorporated areas around them including Stevens Creek Valley east of Guerneville and western side of Stevens creek north of Petaluma In 1905 when State Route 20 became State Route 101 (SR 101), most portions east of SR 101 were also transferred to SR 101 as well as portions west of SR 101 On November 3rd 1910 an act known as ""The Goodyear Act"" prohibited discrimination against women in employment based on their gender or race within any business or organization

Santee and his wife Lydia Bigham Santee. The two were pioneers in the early days of citrus farming in the area. In 1865, a post office called "Santo" was established in honor of SSanto Francisco Xavier Chavez who had been killed during the Gold Rush several years earlier. On October 12, 1868, Santee's first school opened with 36 students and 3 teachers. In 1870-71ene school district was organized and within it Santee School District #1 became an all-volunteer public schools system which served students from SantEEtown Upper Township through Middleton and Southwick Schools Districts 1-3 as well as SEEDO Elementary School until 1975 when they became part of Southwick School District #1 In 1901-1902 Santa Barbara County was formed from parts of San Bernardino County including San Bernardino and Riverside Counties plus Fullerton and Orange Counties On December 2nd 1903 James E Sweeny died leaving his five children Anna (1873–1964), John (1875–1948), Jessie Mae (1877–1965), Emma Lou (1879–1968)and James Ellison Sweeny Sr.(1881–1967). They sold their interest to Andrew Dickson who also took over management of the new school district The original white frame building that still stands today near the intersection of Main Street & East Road is said to be built by James Ellison Sweeny Sr., one of the original settlers James Ellison Sweeny Jr., born February 15th 1902 will forever be remembered as "Mr. Baseball" for his participation in baseball at Hilbert High School where he played catcher on both teams during 1922-24 seasons under coach Dave Grier . He later played professional baseball with the St Louis Cardinals , Boston Red Sox , Milwaukee Brewers and Oakland Athletics . Mr. Baseball also founded American Legion Post 912 yards east of town along US 90 North just south of Interstate 10
