In 1868, Edward Hutton bought 640 acres of Rancho San Pedro from Manuel Nieto and planted wheat, barley and other crops on what is now Santee Creek. The first post office was established in 1870, and the name given to the creek by Hutton became Santee after his home town in England. Today's Santee Theater opened its doors in 1923 as one of three theaters serving Fresno County. The theater closed in 1984 but reopened as a community center in 1990 before being sold to the city of Visalia in 2003. In 2006, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. In early 2009, crews began dismantling parts of an old school building which had been standing vacant for more than twenty years near downtown SantEE while they replaced a new school with more square footage on land leased from Kern County for that purpose; construction started on March 11th but continued into April due to weather conditions which led to several missed deadlines
