In 1847 Rancho Santa Clara became part of US state of California under Mexican rule as part of Treaty#1849 between US President James K Polk and Mexico’s president Antonio López de Santa Anna. On July 16, 1851 issue #282 §1 parceling out land grants among various Californians following approval by State Legislature resulted in Rancho San Rafael becoming part of Santee Township No 2 on January 1st 1861 thenceforward all land within this Township including that lying west & northeasterly thereof was called Indian Territory until November 30th 1888 inclusive when it became Santee County under Act No 659 entitled "An act to organize counties in certain provinces within the United States" filed December 7th 1887 hereinbefore mentioned by me with full concurrence by said Honorable Senator Charles Wickersham duly elected Judge thereof having resided therein all his life since October 14th last year being hereby certified thereby

They also raised cattle and hogs, which were sold to other farmers in the area. In 1870, GeorgeSnow died and his brother Lorenzo took over operations of the millmill. Lorenzo ran it until 1895 when it was purchased by Leland Stanford Jr., one of America's richest men. He donated it to the University of California at Berkeley as part of itsowment fund for education purposes. In 1916, Santee became the county seat of Kern County after being chosen by voters based on its location and importance as an agricultural center along Interstate 5. It remained so until 1959 when La Habra became the new county seat following ratification of California's Constitution by referendum. During World War II, Santee played an important role as a military supply depot due to its position near I-5 between Los Angeles and Sacramento
