By 2000, Santee had regained its prosperity and was one of Southern California's fastest-growing communities. Today Santee is known for its vibrant cultural life and historical significance; its wide variety of shops, restaurants and services; and its pedestrian-friendly streetscape which includes many charming little villages dating back more than 100 years.
Santee was founded in 1871 by brothers George and John Santee. The first post office in Santee was established in 1872. In 1880, the Santees built a saw mill on the banks of the Susquehanna River. The mill produced lumber for local homes and businesses. In 1909, the Santees donated their Saw Mill property to the town of Santee for use as a public school district.
