Santa Rosa, California is a city in Sonoma County, California, United States. The population was 37,671 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sonoma County. Santa Rosa was founded on December 25, 1853 by prospectors from Sacramento and San Francisco as a small town named Brentwood on the site of an old mission known as The Mission Santa Rosa de la Concepción. The name changed to Santa Rosa in 1868 when it became part of Rancho Cañon del Norte. The first post office in Santa Rosa opened in 1857 and remained open until 1907. In 1905, telephone service began for the town and by 1912 there were several banks and stores. The first electric power plant in Northern California was built here in 1916 by GEICO with two 200-volt transformers imported from Europe. A large brewery called North Face Brewing Company began brewing beer in 1922 and continued until its closure in 1984; today's only standing building from that era is a foundation still visible near the intersection of University Avenue and Donnybrook Road outside of downtown Santa Rosa
Santa Rosa was first settled in 1846 by American Nathaniel Fuller. A post office called Santa Rosa was founded in 1850, and the city was incorporated on December 15, 1875. The city's first mayor was J.C. Browning. In 1907, the California Legislature renamed the town "Santa Rosa" after General Mariano Pacheco y Costilla, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became a hero of President Theodore Roosevelt's Bullock Expedition into Mexico in 1903.
