In 1879–80 Alvarado Street was built between downtown Santa Rosa and Coyote Hillock as a waypoint for wagon trains traveling north to Yuba River valley during the summertime when sections of Napa County were uninhabited but available for farming purposes On May 25, 1886 local citizens raised enough money from corral sales to purchase 5 acres (20 hectares) on East Main Street from George Vining for $2 per acre ($6 per hectare).
