Santa Rosa, California is a city in Sonoma County, California, United States. The population was 739 at the 2010 census. Santa Rosa is located on the north bank of the Napa River and at its narrowest point forms a peninsula between San Pablo Bay to the east and Petaluma Creek to the west. On 3 December 1849, Jedediah Smith discovered gold in what is now Santa Rosa. The first European settlement in what is now Santa Rosa was made by Captain George Vancouver on 15 May 1851 as Humboldt's Townsite (near modern-day Redding). In 1860, General John C. Fremont founded an independent town named after him called "Fremont" in present-day Petaluma Peninsula south of Santa Rosa; both towns were abandoned when Californio forces invaded Nevada during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). The name of American Settlement No. 1 within Yountville Township became known as "Santa Rosa." A post office called Woodbury was established at Woodbury Landing on 9 November 1861, and remained open until it merged with Yountville on 1 February 1882. In 1868 Folsom & Companys built a flour mill on Napa River nearmodern day Folsom Street (). This mill became one of the largest flour mills in Northern California and remain so today with over 100 employees - most are employed by Folsom Flour Mills Inc., which also operates six stores across Northern California including two in Santa Rosa - making it one of largest retailers outside of Chicago. The Atchison Globe Trekker Railway reached Santa Rosa from Sacramento via Yountville on 10 August 1870 and passenger service continued until withdrawn 15 October 1893 due to construction costs overruns associated with Emperor Kuo's new line from Sacramento through eastern Sonoma County to Guerneville; all trains stopped at Pacheco Pass just past modern day Gringotts Road before continuing downriver past Rohnert Park to Reno en route back to Sacramento.
