The first permanent school building was built in 1865; it served as a girls' high school until 1922 when it became coeducational after state law changed gender segregation laws across most American states at that time. By 1880, one-third of all fruits grown in Contra Costa County were exported to various markets around the world (almonds being particularly prominent). A new railroad station was built southwest of downtown on Third Street between Folsom Boulevard and Highway 99W (now Interstate 5) during this time period; Amtrak's Coast Starlight service stopped at this station from 1966 to 1990 before moving up I-5 to nearby Sacramento Municipal Airport. By 1910, more than 60% of all traffic through downtownSanta Rosa originated from agriculture or transportation; manufacturing accounted for only 2%.
