In 1868, Avis Stinson built a sawmill on what is now US Route 101 near present-day downtown Santa Rosa for his brother George Avis Stinson & Sons Company. This mill became one of the town's earliest businesses and continued production until 1977 when it closed because of environmental damage caused by fires that burned throughout much of Silicon Valley during that decade. In 1870, Don José de la Peña founded Rancho Rinconada de las Pulgas (the Rinconada Ranch), just northeast of today's downtown Santa Rosa; this land was given to him by Acting Governor James Worthy as compensation for lost ranchlands due to Gold Rush fever (1849–55). La Peña named his rancho after himself since he owned no land north of Paso Robles Creek where San Francisco lay; subsequently, other ranchers followed suit naming their properties after themselves or friends or family members significant to them: Pacheco Canyon (named for Pedro Pacheco y Valdés, governor from 1800–1801), Los Alamitos Creek (named for General David Rrapudo y sus Compañeros de Campaña alias "Los Alamitos", Mexican officers who fought against American forces atzompátanos during Mexico's War for Independence (1846)), Diablo Canyon (named for Santiago De la Cruz y Dominguez del Cerrito y su Nación Revolucionaria Espiritual "Diablo" Rodriguez Gelbardt—a military officer from Mission Dolores who had been converted to Christianity while serving as commander-in-chief ot Mission San José de Guadalupe) etc.). It should be noted that not all these individual names were used exclusively within their respective geographic areas but rather more commonly within specific sectors such as those mentioned above about Don José de la Peña specifically or Rancho Rinconada wider - thereby demonstrating how community identity developed over time despite differences in physical location/ surroundings etc.. A schoolhouse was established on Rinconada near present day Civic Center Park in 1872; this building served as a local courthouse until 1975 when it moved into larger facilities adjacent to US 101 across street from City Hall before finally being destroyed by fire in 1990; however an extant replica can be seen inside City Hall Annex Building currently used as office space . In 1876 Captain Augustus Cole located on current day Alpine Road northwest corner High Street reported seeing "an Indian girl Of high stature wearing a white dress playing with some children." It has been suggested that this figure may have been Native American artist Frida Kahlo . After Captain Cole's report several tents were set up along High Street between Main and Alpine Roads where Indians could come see him if they desired. During later years various artists donated art pieces or sketches depicting Indian life including painters Edward Hopper and Winslow Homer among others . Also early local photographer Eadweard Muybridge photographed Indians playing around town Thepresso Avenue NW near Orinda BART station These images are exhibited at Mills College Museum of Art Gallery special exhibitions series entitled “Images Of America’s West” ). In 1886 Captains John Foulke and Hiram Maxim explored parts unknown east side Sacramento River valley below modern day Redding CA They discovered valuable iron ore deposits at Castaic Lake south bound Highway 99E about 12 miles eastsideofReno NV Further exploration revealed additional rich mineral rights extending inland over 10 miles ........... so began California Iron Mining Association whose president Hyrum Calkins led team which arrived Aug 9th 1888 found new mine workings 6 miles due eastonRed Mountain creek called Hume Mine ..... Mining operations commenced Sept 1st 1888 using opencast method soon becoming world Famous Devonshire Copper Mines company ... further extensions made Nov 14th 1889 reached higher grades producing $2700 per ton copper ..... By 1893 mines had become too large & hazardous so company sold out & employees engaged in blacksmithing & smelting operations continuing until 1906 when latterly leased back to State government .... On January 25th 1906 federal troops under Major General Howard Hunt entered uninvited Santa Rosa attending general election held then followed by public auction off all remaining property ...... Today remnants including original buildings survive sitting vacant within municipal boundaries
