Santa Rosa, California is a city located in Northern California. The population was 138,731 as of the 2010 census. Santa Rosa is the largest city in Sonoma County and the county seat of Santa Rosa County. Thehistoric center of Santa Rosa has been replaced by the new downtown area which opened in 2017. The old mill complex still stands within walking distance from most downtown areas. The first Europeans to visit what is now Santa Rosa were Spanish missionaries who founded Mission San Francisco de Asís on an hill overlooking present-day Downtown Santa Rosa in 1769. Father Junípero Serra directed construction of the mission and its convent on beautiful Rancho El-Malfitano (now known as Adobe Park). In 1821, when Mexico gained independence from Spain, they designated Rancho El-Malfitano as part of Alta California under Mexican Federal Law No. 9 Ley de Justicia y Penal Pública de 1821. Anglo settlers began arriving in earnest during the next two decades and by 1845 had created a small town east of downtown near the creek that would later become Fillmore Street - now known as Third Street - with some 40 adobe buildings and over 100 residents including 12 schools and a brewery/grader’s store on Fillmore Street between Fourth and Fifth Streets. In 1850, following gold discovery at Sutter’s Mill on Hetch Hetchy Creek several miles south of town, about 3 percent (less than $1 per ounce) of all output from all fields in California went to subsidize development around Sacramento for miners associated with Comstock Lode Mining Company (later American Gold Fields Corporation). With no assurances that supplies would continue to arrive or that prices for gold would not rise any higher, many people left their homes because there was little future prospecting potential available other than surface mining operations scattered throughout central valley counties bordering Nevada where silver lay hidden among quartz reefs less than 1 mile deep! As production at Comstock declined beginning in1858 due to strikes by American workers led by John Dutton – one half brother of William Randolph Hearst – wealthy men across northern California responded to cries for help from those living below poverty lines facing closure or confiscation of their land through eminent domain proceedings initiated by Governor Goodwin Moody without public hearings or knowledge either party possessed about gold reserves underlying these properties! With claims amounting to 6 square miles including much older placermining regions stretching back several thousand years!!! From this point forward control over resources moved up through political factions with little regard for ancient rights nor common sense regarding economical development!! This process terminated abruptly with grepolitic violence surrounding successful efforts culminating in US military occupation during World War II !! A few families did manage to retain property but large chunks were sold off subsequent expropriations leading up today’s homeless problem…..Today much like then it was Incredibly hard work getting here……..It started simple….and ended horrendously
