Soon afterwards Father Junipero met Lieutenant James Cook who had sailed independently up Yuba River estuary charting large areas including Trinity Mission area where Discovery Tree now stands! Santa Rosa, California was founded on January 24, 1851 by Jedediah Smith and his brother-in-law, William Richardson. The original town site was located on the banks of the Santa Rosa River. In 1852, the first school was built in what is now downtown Santa Rosa. In 1865, a post office and jail were built in what is now the Civic Center. The city government was organized on December 1, 1876 with a population of only fifty people. Santa Rosa became an incorporated city on January 3rd of that year. On November 17th of the same year, fire destroyed most of downtown Santa Rosa and leveled much of the civic center; however, many important buildings survived and are still standing today including City Hall (now Richardson Hall), Mayor's Office Building (now City Courthouse), Post Office building (now First National Bank Tower), and several blocks of Richardsons Homes housing development which were demolished in 1974 to make way for new soccer fields at University Park Drive and Richardsons Avenue
