When American pioneers began arriving in Santa Rosa in 1849, they brought with them what are today called binoculars. The name Santa Rosa comes from Mission San Francisco de Asís, founded in 1797 by Franciscan missionaries. A rancho called Rancho Rinconada was granted to Francisco Paloma by General Antonio Regnault in 1847. In 1851, Ulysses S. The area now known as Santa Rosa became part of Napa County when it was created on November 3, 1853 via an act of the California Legislature. In 1870 the first post office opened at Santa Rosa with three mail sacks per week capacity; however today only one postal service still operates out of Santa Rosa - that of USPS ZIP Code 95501 (the old post office address). A new courthouse and jail were built between 1907-1911 and are now used as museums operated by Sonoma County Museum District; they are also included within the boundaries of Downtown Santa Rosa Historic District which encompasses more than 100 buildings dating back to 1840s including several churches and other civic institutions which have been preserved unchanged since that time Government services were moved from downtown Santa Rosa to a new facility south of town starting operations on October 1st 1955 after years of planning and construction; that facility is currently known as Paine Hall which houses various government offices including county hall and numerous courtrooms among others DowntownSantaRosalina has undergone several redevelopment projects over recent decades with most recently becoming home to a large mixed-use development known as Arts District South adjacent to Paine Hall which features high quality retail and dining options as well as art galleries, music venues and more . The history of this small city goes back much further than just 1850 when it formed part of Napa County – it has been through many changes throughout its existence! Today’sSantaRosa reflects both its pastime (Christmas) AND future potential (growing economy), thanks in part to its location on one of Northern California’s most popular tourist destinations: Mendocino Coast wine country! This tiny community started off life primarily as homesteaders who set up camp along what is now Highway 101 outside modern day Santa Rosa during wintertime. They would cook their food over an open fire back then until morning temperatures warmed up enough so they could go continue their journey westward into wine country. It wasn’t long before some entrepreneurs decided they wanted their pieceofthe action too! Soooo…these folks got together(?)and organized themselves into an early business venture-namely buying some land where they would build their very own little town center surrounded ONLY by THEIR OWN property!) And voila!…..their very own little village had come alive again 🙂 From here onwards things grew rapidly for these pioneers because THEY were THE ones who put all those businesses into place that make this sleepy little corner so special today – something you can see EVERY DAY WHEN YOU VISIT SANTA ROSA ON THE MENDOCINO COAST! Just picture all those Christmas picnics/festivals/wine tastings/etc., all happening inside THIS SAME LOCATION WHERE BACK IN DECEMBER OF 1849 THEY FIRST SET UP CAMPSITE!!! How sweet it must have been for them(?)to watch traffic slowly crawl around them while families gathered aroundTHE OPEN FIRE FOR CHRISTMAS!!
