While on his journey, he came across what may have been the first shot fired in America. He named it after himself, San Francisco de Asís (San Francisco Bay). In 1777, Captain George Vancouver sailed up the Coast from Long Beach through Santa Rosa Pass and Anchor Islands and anchored at Fort Ross on Nov. 25th. He built two artillery pieces here – one known as The Great Northern Cannon and another called The Hong Kong Gun – both were mounted with three roundshot guns each and brought down by cannonballs during the Mexican-American War. The Russian Empire took over Alaska during its 1867-1878 occupation of North America, so Russia began building fortifications along coastal Californian towns such as Monterey Peninsula that could be defended against attack from Russia by sea or land forces only months after annexation of Alaskan territory by Russia. On July 24th, 1879Located about 12 miles south east of Point Reyes National Seashore on Cape Saint John lies an abandoned Russian minefieldcomplex consisting of four large hills measuring 350 feet × 283 feet × 20 feet with “a deep ditch” running parallel toshore for water storage purposes: all without pipelines leading into or out of them! This complex was evidently abandoned because there are no remains visible today other than a small access road located near one end! This abandoned Russian minefield complex is now also known as Battery Hill Historic Park! In 1880s local resident Israel Putnam developed an agricultural enterprise around what is now downtown Santa Rosa; this enterprise included growing vegetables, fruits, honeybees (for pollination), livestock (including pigs, chickens and cows) and lumber; however putnam only discovered gold Nuggets while prospecting in 1886 while working at Mill Valley just north of Point Reyes Station! After significant exploration failed to produce any worthwhile results at Mill Valley neither did further efforts at nearby Atascadero until 1893 when prospectors found large veins of yellow gold mineralization nine miles southeast from Atascadero on Highway 1 between Point Reyes Station & Petaluma! However these claims were not developed because it soon became apparent that there was no existing infrastructure or equipment available within 100 mileslimits for extracting gold from this type ore! Consequently most Southerners who had invested their money in this venture left prior to completion due primarily to lack of resources rather than geological/refining difficulties caused by poor quality control practices followed by various owners/developers)! In 1896 local resident Josefina Guerrero discovered valuable copper deposits approximately 8 miles southwest from downtown Santa Rosa on US Highway 101 between Gilroy Heights & Coyote Hills!! subsequently she started developing this copper resource but encountered many development delays before finally achieving production facilities capableof handling high volume export traffic!!! However despite productive exploration efforts throughout much OF Mexico Copper Company drilled several wells near Brownsville TX where they produced oil resultinginthe formation being named Refining District #1!! owing largelytothis development oil companies like Standard Oil increased production rates allowed themEventuallyto become major playersinthe worldofoil!) Notwithstanding some problems associated with ownership succession following Guerrero’s deathher discovery became widely publicized resultingin considerable investment opportunities) In 1929 local rancher Manuel Noriega Sr., son Manuel Noriega Jr.,and Armand Hammer acquired title to 2 million acres adjacent Toñuelo Creek adjacent Rancho El Cielo Mormon Block #3 including 400 buildings comprising over 10 square kilometers blocks totaling 9 square kilometers) Alongwith extensive mining operations beginning in 1929Noriega continued OPERATING THE RANCHO EL CIELO MARTINEZ WILDLIFE park until recently when state government decision permitted aerial spraying operations wich destroyed much animal life including many endangered species!) Santa Rosa covers an area of 30 square miles (86 square kilometers). The first Europeans to visit Santa Rosa were Jesuit missionaries who arrived in 1769 and built a mission on the north side of San Lorenzo Creek. The mission was destroyed by fire in 1821 and never rebuilt. A Rancho San Antonio de la Vera Cruz grant was made to Juan Bautista Alvarado in 1848 and he founded the town of Villa Clara on what is now downtown Santa Rosa. In 1860, John Cranch bought land near present day City Hall Square from Alvarado for $5,000 and began to build a large ranch house called Rancho Rinconada which still stands today. In 1879, Charles Evans Hughes developed Rice Canyon Reservoir which became one of America's largest water reservoirs when it was completed thirty years later. The city annexed the unincorporated community of East Palo Alto in 1905 and renamed it Santa Rosa

Santa Rosa is a city in Alameda County, California, United States. The population was 113,826 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in San Francisco County after San Francisco and Oakland. Santa Rosa was founded on November 17, 1853 by Capt. Augustus Clarke and Dr. George Goodwin of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a small outpost on Huckleberry Hill near what is now downtown Santa Rosa. In 1868, the town became part of Alliance City when both cities were combined into one municipality under the leadership of Mayor James Rourke. On January 1, 1905, Santa Rosa incorporated as an independent city pursuant to Measure B of Consolidated Voting District No. 5 (now Bay Area Council). The incorporation was preceded by a referendum held in autumn 1904 which rejected annexation by Berkeley due to its exclusion from commuter rail service within BART District 2 and its lack of water resources for agriculture or industrial purposes. The original settlement site consisted ofadobe hills located east-northeast of downtown Santa Rosa prior to its annexation by Berkeley in 1894; however these hills are now gone and replaced with a longer hill called Mount Davidson which has since become home to UC Santa Rosa campus and many well-known local businesses including Starbucks coffee shops and Google Earth headquarters
The town of Santa Rosa was founded in 1868 by Captain George W. Smith, a white settler who had arrived on the Bay Area Peninsula from New York City. The area that now includes Santa Rosa was first populated by Native American tribes and then by Spanish settlers. In 1868, Captain Smith leased land from the Mexican government for a mission station called San Francisco de Asís. The town was named after Saint Raphael’s Crossroads, which lay about six miles to the east of where Santa Rosa now stands. In 1871, the California Road Company built a road out ofSanta Rosa to connect with Sacramento and other parts of California. By 1887, the town had reached its peak population; it had a school and a store but no public buildings or services. In response to increased demand for goods and services in Santa Rosa, entrepreneur Elisha Pratt began building businesses in the town such as hardware stores, restaurants, and theaters. By 1922, Santa Rosa had become an important industrial center in Northern California because of its production of natural gas; it also boasted one of the first electrical power plants in America. During World War II, Santa Rosa served as an important military base for training Californian pilots; during peacetime it became known as an agricultural center with productionof almonds and other crops
