Micheltorena marched his brigade southeast along present-day Ubatilla Road to meet López de Santa Anna's column northeast ofpresent-day Nogales on May 16th and 17th near Presentation Valley before halting about two miles east ofpresent-day Mount Shasta on May 21st while deciding whether or not to cross Siboney Creek into Arizona Territory soon after surrendering Fort Buena Vista to American forces on June 14th. In 1875, California became a state and Santa Paula was selected as the county seat. The first post office opened in Santa Paula on May 15, 1875. The town grew rapidly and by 1886 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1912, the city annexed part of Rancho Cucamonga which increased its population to over 10,000 people. The City Council decided in 1957 to change the name of the city to Santa Paula because it was an easier word for residents to remember than "Pasadena."
