Santa Paula is a city in Ventura County, California, United States. The population was 103,883 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Santa Paula is located on U.S. 101 south of downtown Los Angeles and east of Oxnard and Malibu. The first people to settle in what is now Santa Paula were the Tongva people who encampated there for about 10 years from around AD 1000 until they were pushed out by the Gabrielino settlers in 1542, according to historian Ethelbert Mooney. In 1821 Mexican land grant document Rancho San Vicente de los Bancos was awarded to José María Cisneros and his brother Fernando, both graduates of Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Rosario (now UC Berkeley). They founded an Agricultural District which included parts of Ventura County and portions of Orange County. They named their new settlement after Saint Paul's Cathedral in Rome, Italy where they had been staying since their arrival in 1819 as part of a group sent by Bishop Manuel Michelini to survey Visitacion Valley land grants made during President James K Polk'sMexican Land Grant Act in 1846-47. In 1850 Juan Bautista Alvarado acquired Rancho San Vicente de los Bancos from José María Cisneros; he also acquired title to alluvial fill underlying Mission Creek that flows through town center between Russian Hill Road (north) and Monterey Road (south). In 1862 John Sutter arrived with his family from Northern California via Oregon and founded Sutter's Fort on present-day Moorpark Boulevard east of streets leading into town center including present-day Main Street east of Russian Hill Road; he named it after General Francisco Xavier Solano y Ortega's old Spanish fort at Tucson known as San Francisco de Asís or Presidio Real de Toluca near modern day Obispo Avenue south of Interstate 5 just west of downtown Los Angeles then just northwest along I-5 before rejoining I-5 south again becoming Old Highway 101 west past Redondo Beach then following Pacific Coast Highway north past Lululemon Athletica Resort & Spa before finally concluding at I-5 south again becoming Old Highway 101 west past Redondo Beach

Santa Paula is a small town located in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. The population was estimated to be over 100,000 as of 2010. Santa Paula has been home to people who have played an important role in the history of the area, including Mission Indians and Chinese immigrants. The first Europeans to visit what is now Santa Paula were Spanish missionaries in 1769. The mission was abandoned two years later after being attacked by Native Americans. A rancho was granted in 1824 to José Antonio de Alvarado, who named it Rancho San Pablo. In 1870, a group of Englishmen came across the bay and built a wharf at Point Reyes Station on Sausalito Creek. They called their new settlement "New Town" because they had not found any other places with that name yet. In 1879, American troops arrived in California and burned down the old town while retreating from Mexican forces during the Alta California Rebellion. The next year saw the arrival of more Americans when Commodore John D Anderson landed his forces at Point Reyes station with intentions of exploring California's coastline for potential oil reserves. He discovered no oil but did find valuable gold fields near Vallejo Cove on Sausalito Creek which he named Encinal Gold Fields after his hometown of Encinal, Mexico City. After conferring with President Rutherford B Hayes about how best to dispose of these riches, he decided to keep them and rename them Encinal Gold Mines instead (the first mineral rights were sold in 1880). He also founded a post office at New Town so residents could communicate with him directly rather than going through London or Spain which took time and cost money letters would take weeks to get back home). In 1886 he donated land for what would become University Park which still stands today on parts of Rancho San Pablo Boulevard outside town limits
In 1849, the Mexican government granted land to American settlers in what is now Santa Paula. The town was founded on December 7, 1849 by Captain Nicholas S. Noyes and his men with the help of local farmers. The first post office was established in 1851. In 1863, the US military burn down a warehouse near the town to cut off supplies to Mexico during the Hidalgo Rebellion. In 1886, a train derailed at San Francisco and Santa Paula caused a derailment that killed 27 people and injured over 150 others. The townsite of Santa Paula became part of Riverside County on November 3, 1912. On December 1, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson listedSanta Paula as one of five communities that were bombed in World War I for their pro-German sentiment. On January 20, 1918 an incendiary bomb exploded at a munitions plant in Santa Paula killing four workers and injuring twenty-six others; this bombing was considered one of the deadliest bombings in California history. A new high school was built in 1922 and renamed after General Douglas MacArthur following his victory over Japan at Okinawa Landing on August 14th that year; MacArthur had received awards from President Wilson for his role in Allied victory at Midway Island which ended Japan's attempt to retake mainland Asia
