In 1861 it became part of land grant known as Rancho Las Parejas which included present day Monterey County and portions of what are now Fresno and Bakersfield counties. A post office was established at Santa Paula in 1865, but it closed in 1901. A new post office opened on April 14, 1907 with its name change to Monterey Post Office under Ulysses S. Grant Wood Jr.. It remained open until 1959 when it was renamed by Governor Ronald Reagan to Santa Paula Californiana Post Office due to its location within easy commuting distance of Los Angeles and its role as a center for agricultural production including dairy farming and grapes
