Santa Paula is a small city in the southern California county of Ventura. It is located on the banks of the Santa Paula River, about 15 miles (24 km) south of Los Angeles and about 20 miles (32 km) east of downtown Los Angeles. The population was 3,023 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit what is now Santa Paula were Spanish missionaries in 1769–1770. They built Mission San Gabriel Arcangela on land that now includes part of downtown Santa Paula. A mission was founded by Father Junípero Serra in 1823, but it only lasted six months before being destroyed by an earthquake. Later missions followed: Mission San Francisco de Asís (1827),Mission San José de la Luz (1831),Mission Concepción del Cobre (1835), and Mission Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes (1841). In 1853, gold was discovered at Saugus Mine in Ventura County and soon people were coming to see it because there was no way to get rich quick from mining gold out here like there had been in California since prior to European settlement. In 1859, a son of wealthy Mexican-American rancher Manuel Nieto started building a ranch called Rancho Rinconada just north of present-day Santa Paula on what is now known as Chavez Ravine Road near Present-Day American Canyon Drive. He named his rancho after his father’s home town of Rinconada, Mexico where he had been born and raised. The new owner made some Improvements including turning off most water supplies so that his cattle could have plenty of water while they grazed; this caused much contention with surrounding farmers who felt gouged for their share A post office was established at Saugus Mines on December 12th, 1860 under the name “Santa Paula”; however it didn’t open until 1861 when Wm Hite opened up shop with help from Leland Stanford Jr., one half brotherof Mr. Nieto’s wife María Esther Cámpora Stanislaus y Hite which later became Mrs. John F Kennedy Sr.. The post office continued operation until 1909 when all mail service between Sacramento and Ventura County stopped due to competition from Southern Pacific Railroad which built its own line northeast from Pasadena through Simi Valley into Ventura County without ever crossing over into Kern County! On January 1st 1865 US Grant issued an Executive Order #10646 giving Approval for Donation Of Lands To University Of Southern California By George C Marshall This angered many people as they saw this as another example how Grants government power unchecked went too far On November 10th 1865 A Treaty was ratified by United States Congress Which Resolved That The Town Of Santa Paula Be Named After General James Phelan And His Wife Adaline Oakley Phelan When It Became Clear That There Was No Plans To Turn Over Any More Land For Use In College And So On October 5th 1866 A Bill Was Passed In The State Legislature To Change Name To “Santa Clara University” Finally On February 14th 1870 A Resolution Passed By The City Council Said That All Properties But One Which Belonged To George C Marshall Be Sold And Rebuilt As An Academic Institution Called “George Washington University” Now Known As “USC” With ClassesBeginingInSeptember1970There WereOver40StudentsAt commencementItWas America's First university
