The first handguns were made in Santa Paula, California in 1892. The pistols were called "Pistols of the People." In 1903, the first National Firearms Act was passed and firearms became regulated under this act. This law created a system for manufacturers to register their firearms with the government and receive a license to sell them. Firearms production continued until 1934 when prohibition was repealed. During prohibition, Santa Paula became known as the "Gun capital of America" because of its high concentration of firearm manufacturing businesses. Many outlaws such as Al Capone and Humphrey Bogart used Santa Paula as a base camp during their criminal activities. After repeal of prohibition, gun ownership resumed in Santa Paula and Pistol production recommenced. However, due toregulated industry, prices for handguns began to increase rapidly which caused many small businesses to fold within a few years. By 1968-1969 there were only 10 companies left making handguns in America with over 2 million pistols manufactured each year*. The townsite was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

Santa Paula is a small town in California, located about 25 miles (40 km) north of San Francisco on the banks of the Sacramento River. The first Europeans to encounter what is now Santa Paula were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his ship La Navidad on October 8, 1769. He named it after Saint Paul's Cathedral in Rome. The town was founded by Mexican Missionaries who arrived in 1821, but it wasn't until 1867 that the first post office was established. The railroad came through the area in 1886 and soon Santa Paula became an important transportation center for eastern Californians interested in mining gold and other minerals near Stockton. In 1905, a school was built and renamed Santa Paula High School; within two years, the population had reached 1,500 residents. In 1916, during World War I, many American servicemen from nearby Bakersfield gathered at Santa Paula to help with munitions production. In 1927, when California joined the United States as a state, Santa Paula became part of its new political system with statewide elected officials The Theater District opened up around 1930 with some of Southern California's most popular stages such as Paramount Pictures' "Casablanca" and MGM's "A Star Is Born". And then came Hollywood! Actor/director Haskell Wexler set up shop here before moving to Warner Bros., while screenwriter Preston Sturges wrote his hit movie "The Public Enemy" here. When war ended there were mass layoffs across much of southern California so many people moved back into Santa Paula they forgot their original homes! In 1951 local high school seniors started teaching themselves how to code so they could create their own website; today this technology continues to play a key role in our community. Over time we've seen an explosion of entrepreneurship here – everything from home-based businesses to online courses and startups! Santa Paula was founded by the Spanish in 1777. It became an official town in 1881. The first school was opened in 1879. The city's first street, Avenida de la Santa Paula, was named for the town's founder.
