Santa Paula, California is a small city located in the southern end of Ventura County, California. The population was 7,409 as of the 2010 census. Santa Paula is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Santa Paula were Spanish explorers in 1821 who named it San Pedro de Atacama after a local mountain. In 1847, Mexican miners discovered gold here and began to settle the area. The name "Santa Paula" was given to the town by General José Manuel Carrillo while he was commanding an army against Pueblo Indians in 1848. In 1860, American Captain George Harkness arrived in Ventura County and called at San Pedro de Atacama before sailing up the Santa Clara River to Vallejo He found good prospect for gold here but no one had yet come looking for it because there was no real trail leading thereto. In 1862 Captain David Sanger set out from Oakland with his overland party on horseback searching forgold discoveries and returned about 1870 reporting rich mines at Porter Ranch north of present-day Santa Paula. This initial discovery led to large public speculation that claimed many lives during parts of this period as wildcat prospectors went from place to place finding new fields where they’d never gone before On July 5th, 1863 Union soldier Hiram Bingham burned down two buildings on Main Street (now Ulysses S Grant Boulevard) near today's High School which had been built on that spot in 1865 when Mr. Bingham was indicted for arson related to these building fires – still an issue with some people today! This event started a firestorm that continues through history being considered one of the most notorious events in our community’s history! One other early settler hereabouts was John Copley who arrived around 1840 from Quincy, Massachusetts aboard HMS Beagle under Captains Cook and Livingstone tryingto find something new land way off America's West Coast whereupon he landed at Point Mugu on December 8th 1840 while supplies were being unloaded ashore from USS Enterprise). He established a store at what is now called Copley & Sons Store which continued until destroyed by fire about 1900; then various ranchers took up shop there also including Jens Jacobsen (1812-1892), pioneer Winterset Hardware merchant and postmaster general for California during Prohibition; Chas Chandler (a native Angeleno) ran cattle operations until 1907; Wm Fetterman (1868-1942) operated Placerita Mine prior to coming here with his partner Gustavus Holtzclaw PP&E about 1916; Gussie Holtzclaw purchased Placerita Mine circa 1920; current owner - Richard Avey

On December 18, 1860, the settlers on Santa Paula Peninsula decided to name their new community after Saint Paul. The first town meeting was held on January 3, 1861 and the name was chosen unanimously. The first post office was established at this location on February 2, 1861. In 1865, a school was built and named in honor of Dr. John Fetterman of Oakland. In 1868 a church was also built and named in honor of SaintPaul.
