Santa Paula is a small, but vibrant town in the Santa Clara Valley of California. The population was 3,619 at the 2010 census. It lies about 43 miles (70 kilometers) east of San Francisco and is bordered by Palo Alto to the north, Menlo Park to the east, San Mateo County to the south, and Livermore Valley to the west. The first Europeans to visit what is now Santa Paula were members of Spain's failed attempt in 1769-1770 to establish a mission on peninsula lying between Monterey Bay and San Francisco Bay. A second Spanish expedition discovered sugarcane here in 1821 while exploring wine country between San Francisco and Monterey. The first commercially viable crops were corn and beans grown by Mexican settlers who arrived during 1849-1851 after General Pedro Fiafa y Aguiar explored Rancho Rinconada (now part of Livermore Valley). In 1862 Major Don José de Alvarado organized a military expedition against Native Americans known as Adobe Walls because they had built strong earthworks near present-day Santa Paula. The walls had been built since 1775 by Ohlone people who defended their land from Mission Dolores forces that pursued them for cattle raiding purposes. Alvarado's force destroyed most of the Adobe Walls before losing contact with their attackers May 25, 1862; this event became known as "Alvarado's Raid." The post office at Santa Paula was established in 1872 when residents of nearby Menlo Park sent mail through Bodega Bayou from their homes on Anza Road near Palo Alto. In 1898 local Democrat John Wickersham won an election as mayoralty over Republican incumbent Rufus Hurd; he served two terms before resigning due to health problems in 1904. Wickersham's successor Harry Chandler served one term until his death in 1908; during his tenure new housing developments began along El Camino Real which eventually became downtown Santa Paula. During World War II many jobs were created by the government program called "Watson Air Force Base." This included employment within Los Alamos National Laboratory located adjacent to town on Candlestick Park Boulevard across from Los Alamos High School where American scientists worked on nuclear weapons development programs during WWII

In 1853, two years after incorporation as a town by the Board of Supervisors of Ventura County, Santa Paula voters passed an ordinance naming the then new town for General Santa Ana de Ayala and his men who fought in Dolores Huerta's Mexican War (1846-48). The community grew rapidly due to its location at the crossing of three major highways: Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), State Route 101 (SR 101), and U.S. Route 395 (US 395). A school opened in 1906 which became one of three high schools in Ventura County;today it is part of Wexford High School District #4A. A garage/shop/cattle station was built on Mission Road adjacent to today's Donnybrook Mall east of downtown Santa Paula and served as the nucleus for many small businesses that developed around it over time including Meyers Chevrolet dealership which became one of Northern California's largest dealerships with more than $1 billion in sales during its heyday;and numerous local restaurants such as Ponderosa Steakhouse which remain some of Southern California's most popular tourist destinations today - serving up contemporary American cuisine under one roof! In recent decades there has been considerable redevelopment taking place within Downtown Santa Paula along with other portions of Downtown Ventura including Donnybrook mall adjacent to Interstate 5 where several high-end retailers have relocated or are currently being constructed such as Nike, Apple Inc., Macy’s etc.;this has resulted in increased vehicular traffic congestion on Mission Road during peak hours but also seen an increase in foot traffic resulting from all the upcoming retail development!
