The town was platted in 1868 by Captain George Hoadley and named for his birthplace and sister-in-law, Saint Paul's Parish in London. The name may be derived from Spanish "santa paloma" meaning "holy dove" because of its location on top of an ancient olive tree that once produced olives for the city's Monterey Mission Hospital. The first post office was established in 1870; it was renamed Santa Paula in 1887 after Lady Clarendon Hastings Smith who helped contribute to the town's development as a citrus farming community. In 1909, the first electric streetcar service ran through the town; it continued until electrification ended in 1948. In 1968, local voters approved a Measure G (which renamed downtown Petaluma as "TheCityCenter") which renovated some streets and added new features such as a large park overlooking Antelope Bayou. Today, Santa Paula is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in Northern California with a population that includes people from all over the world who come to live here for various reasons including wine production orchard work or just wanting to be near some great wine country!
