The name Santa Paula comes from Spanish and means "holy place." The town began as a mission founded by Father Junipero Serra in 1777 and became an agricultural center due to its location along the missions' routes of trade. In 1846, Mexico ceded all of California to the United States after its defeat in the Mexican–American War. In 1848, Santa Paula became part of what was then Marin County and was named for General José Joaquín de Alvarado who had helped liberate Californias from Mexican rule. On July 4th, 1849, American forces burned down some homes in town during an Independence Day military parade led by Commodore John Doolittle with troops under his command. This event marked the start of a long-standing rivalry between Santa Paula and San Francisco which would continue until 1945 when both cities were merged into one municipality

The name “Santa Paula” likely derives from Spanish Saint Paul, who was born in the city of Toledo, Ohio. In 1861, Santa Paula became part of the United States when it was given to California by Mexico as part of their Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The first post office at Santa Paula was established in 1857. The town rapidly grew because of its location on the newly opened Central Pacific Railroad. By 1870, Santa Paula had a population of 1,000 people and boasted a two-story schoolhouse and several churches. A community hall and jail were built soon after. In 1887, the town passed an ordinance establishing prohibition laws which would become one of its most famous features. This law helped drive out many alcoholics and criminals who found sanctuary within its boundaries. The prohibitionism that characterized Santa Paula for much of its history led to some increased crime rates which were compounded by high unemployment rates during World War I (1914-18). However, over time this Prohibitionist attitude softened and many businesses began to reopen including breweries and stores that sold beer not just for consumption but also for export to other countries. As recently as the early 2000s there were still occasional cases of vandalism targeting these reopened businesses however overall criminal activity has declined significantly over recent years One significant development during this time period was the erection or construction of several large new homes beginning with Robert Jarrell’s home in 1922 followed by others such as Harvey Slatkin’s house on Old US 101 in 1928 Additionally local merchants started importing Bungalow style houses starting around 1920 known locally as “Spanish Colonial architecture” These homes are generally considered among the earliest examples of American Craftsmanship Finally after World War II developments such as apartments began replacing traditional single family dwellings Today Santa Paula remains an agricultural community with a strong emphasis on hay production although there are now few if any remaining commercial buildings from earlier times
