It is located on the Santa Barbara Channel and has been inhabited by the Chumash people for over 10,000 years. The name "Santa Paula" comes from Spanish Mission San Francisco de Asís, founded in 1797 by José Antonio Elguerda and his band of missionaries. The first Europeans to see Santa Paula were maritime traders who passed through the area in 1807. They called it "Isla de la Sangre" or "Island of Blood." A wharf was built on what is now Main Street in 1814 by Captain James Cook as he sailed his ship around Cape Horn. In 1824-25, Juan Bautista Moraga landed here after sailing from Monterey Bay with supplies for General Mariano Buenaventura's army during the Mexican War of Independence. He named this place Pueblo de los Padres (Pueblo of the Fathers). In 1850s settlers began arrive from Northern California via Carlsbad Caverns wagon road. By 1860 they had erected a log cabin near what is now Church Street and started to build a town which they called Pie Town because its founders thought that no one would come to live there since no one else wanted to settle there because of its long distance location from Los Angeles and other cities. By 1870 most of these settlers had abandoned Pie Town when gold was found nearby at Comstock Lode along Amboy Lake. A post office was established at Santa Paula in 1872, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1962 due to lack of mail volume; however, it continued to be listed on ZIP code 92634 until that year too! On July 4th 1907 a fire destroyed part of downtown Santa Paula destroying much property including several churches including Our Lady Of Guadalupe Basilica which still stands today! The damage done caused some $2 million dollars worth of damages! Today only an upper floor remains standing but you can view all four stories inside! Many interesting things happened during this time such as: On October 24th 1908 local physician Dr John Sutter opened up his new practice on Broadway near State Street where he continues practicing right up until this day even though he retired seventy five years ago! This event also marked the beginningof doctors being allowed into military service in America!! Also during this time many people starting moving away from rural areas towards big city lifestyles!! Additionally, many businesses have relocated or closed their doors since 2000 due to environmental concerns brought on by recent developments such as energy production facilities nearby along Route 192 - one of several controversial issues facing Santa Paula today
