Santa Paula, California is a city in Ventura County, California. It was incorporated on March 6, 1896 and named for the Spanish Santa Paula mountain range. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. The history of Santa Paula goes back to 1853 when prospectors discovered gold and silver in what is now known as the City of Ventura. The first post office in Santa Paula opened in 1856. In 1893, incorporation of the city occurred with the name of "Ventura". In 1907, voters passed a resolution recommending that the name be changed to "Santa Paula" after General Tomahtana Sánchez de la Torre y Pérez who had fought for Mexico against Great Britain during the Mexican-American War. After some debate over whether or not to change it back to Ventura after he died soon afterwards, it was decided that "Santa Paula" would be more appropriate given that this was then considered by many as being an American city. The first Post Office building burned down on December 4th 1914 but it was rebuilt within a year and until 1925 there were three Post Offices: one downtown (now First United Methodist Church), one off Speedway Boulevard near present day Headquarters Drive (now Donahue Avenue), and one at Weingarten Avenue which served north side residents only. On October 26th 1929 their fourth Post Office building burned down but it too was rebuilt within two years using local lumber from old mills along Donahue Ave.. In 1945 four new buildings were added; One off Broadway just south of Highway 101 North next to annexed Rancho Cucamonga which housed police headquarters until 1969 when they moved into their current facility located on Airport Blvd., just east of I-805 South between Airport Boulevard and Interstate 5 South - later called HQ Plaza development after San Diego's Major League Baseball team San Diego Padres relocated there in 1998). Santa Paula is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Andreas Valley and rests on the old Chico Canyon Railroad right-of-way. Santa Paula's first European settlers were Spanish Missionaries who arrived in 1769. The town was platted in 1874 by a group of local businessmen with help from the Northern Pacific Railway. The post office was established in 1875 and named for Saint Pauls Parish, which included Santa Paula as well as Arroyo Seco and Indian Wells. The original town site was located on what is now southbound I-5 between Rodeo Drive and eastbound SR 99 (now known as US 101). A new town site was chosen northeast of present day Santa Paula on what is now northbound US 101 near the intersection of Bakeman Road andeastbound SR 99 (now called State Route 395). This new town site included land that would later be developed into Rancho Mirage. In 1886, ranchers John Glassell and George Waddell laid out a townsite west of present day downtown Santa Paula to serve their cattle rustlers neighbors downriver at Sutterville. When gold seekers discovered gold near Sutterville in 1849, they abandoned their herds there to prospect for more distant strikes until driving away overland from Angel City through hills west of today’s downtown Santa Paula about 1860 when they learned about an ancient Native American race settlement nearby which had been abandoned for centuries due to hostile Indians living around it; these early prospectors likely encountered what are now known as Mescalero Apache Trail dwellings dating back between 3200 BC to 8000 BC miles northwest or 8 miles due southwest from modern day Angel City .
