Santa Paula is a small city in Ventura County, California, United States. The population was 27,812 at the 2010 census. Santa Paula is located on the eastern edge of Ventura County and is bordered by Oxnard to the east, Pacific Beach to the south and west, and Carpinteria to the north. The first Europeans to visit what is now Santa Paula were Spanish Franciscan missionaries in 1602 who named it San Pablo de las Pulgas (St. Paul's Pillar). A mission was built here in 1797 by Father Junipero Serra; it burned down in 1821 but was rebuilt with additions over time. The town was platted in 1849 on land that had been part of Rancho Cucamonga. The post office opened in 1850. The name "Santa Paula" was chosen because of its resemblance to "Santo Padre" or "saint father." The first store in Santa Paula closed its doors on November 20th 1888 after only five months operation due to low sales from shoppers coming from nearby cities like Simi Valley and Covina which were seeing more promotional activity from New Year's Eve celebrations! In 1886 when there were just 10 people living here, one resident donated two acres (0.40 km2) of his property for use as a public park which became known as Recreation Park #1 today! In 1890 another resident donated three acres (1 km2) for municipal purposes including streets and a water tower! When Parks Department Director Robert Laughlin increased funding available for parks through county government bond issues during 1912-1913 he also issued an order creating Recreation Park #3 which included parts of North Park today! On December 5th 1915 when President Woodrow Wilson signed into law Public Act 94-412 establishing state parks system this area along with South Park across county lines became State Parks System Area 1 within that new agency! Today we enjoy all those lands surrounding us including even more acreage thanks to our recent donation from our previous Mayor Bob Blumenfeld!!

Santa Paula was founded on December 26, 1840 by Don José de la Cosa and his wife Blanca Montoya. It became part of the United States on January 3, 1850. The first postmaster was George Waddell. The first store in Santa Paula opened in 1851. The town quickly grew into an agricultural center with crops such as barley, wheat, hops, apples, and oranges being grown. In 1926 the Santa Paula Dam was built to provide power for the local community and nearby farms; this led to an increase in traffic around the town and a rise in prices for goods sold there. In 1957 the US Highway 101 freeway was completed through Santa Paula making it easier to get around; since then more people have moved into the town which has seen a growth in its nightlife as well as its economy which now relies mainly on agriculture and tourism.
In 1853, the Santa Paula Railroad was built between Refugio and Woodland. The tracks passed through a small valley between hills to reach the ocean at Point Conception. In 1868, the railroad was extended to San Francisco and in 1869, it became part of the Northern Pacific Railway. The first station on Santa Paula Avenue was called "Hillsborough" because it served as a stop for passengers on the Northern Pacific Railroad's torpedo boat service from Point Conception to San Francisco.
